Future - Olympia, Washington (March, 2006) A few years ago, when I decided to explore photography from a more serious perspective, one of my ambitions for the future was to meet other artists. I wanted to interact with, exchange ideas, and hopefully become friends with creative, talented, inspirational people. My hope was to meet individuals who looked at the world with an inquisitive mind and critical eye. This morning, as I was setting up to photograph the work of a recent acquaintance, Chiyo Sanada, it occurred to me that my vision was beginning to take shape. Chiyo, is a talented artist, who has been passionately exploring traditional and experimental calligraphy. I enjoy her work and I am fortunate to be able to call her my friend. This afternoon as we were working through the production process we had established to capture her work, digitally and on film, I stopped to admire this image. When I asked her what the translation was. She smiled and said “Future.” It was one of those moments where the circle of life seemed to have completed a revolution. Tonight, as I document our day, I have to think of the Hawaiian word ho’ailona. Among other things, the notion of ho’ailona offers a strong affirmation that one’s judgments are sound, and their choices are valid. As George Peppard’s character Hannibal Hayes, from the A-Team, so often said, “I love it when a plan comes together!” I encourage you to view Chiyo’s work at www.chiyosanada.com.
