Day Book  Hula Halau - Halaula, Hawaii.  March, 2008

The Day Book link, inspired by "The Daybooks of Edward Weston", takes you to my most recent exposure.  The image is accompanied by musings regarding the work. In fact, this site is based on the belief that a photograph may be worth a thousand words, but a thousand words can set the stage, provide technical detail, or simply tell “the rest of the story.

Landscapes  Palm Geometry - Waikoloa, Hawaii.  March, 2008

A good friend recently gave me a wonderful introduction to palm trees. Prior to our extended conversation, which occurred intermittently over several days, it became clear there is a lot to learn and appreciate about palms individually and in general.  Prior to my palm tutorial, I had only appreciated palms for their general form, symmetry and color. But now, I’m anxious to learn more about their individuality, specific characteristics, growth habits and requirements. How exciting it is to discover a new world to explore!

Nature - Black-Crowned Night Heron (juvenile) Waikoloa, Hawaii.  March, 2008

I’m reluctant to classify this as a “nature” shot given the circumstance. This image of a juvenile Black-Crowned Night-Heron was taken in front of our vacation condo at the Waikoloa Village Beach Resort's “Fairway Villas.”  For the past several mornings I’ve been watching him fishing off a rock outcropping located along a pond adjacent the men’s and ladies’ tee boxes on the 9th fairway directly in front of our lanai. (more...)

Portraits  Dapper - Waikoloa, Hawaii.  March, 2008

After only 5 days, I'm beginning to feel like I live on the island and hopefully, I'm beginning to lose my malihini look and have traded in my socks and shoes for rubbah slippahs.

It took us 6 months to get here, and I know we gave up a lot in the process. My initial impression is that it was worth it.

My goal over the coming years, as a photographer and fledgling writer, is to some how capture and share the aloha spirit, aloha way of life, and aloha culture - so stay tuned.

Street Photography  Slippahs - Hawi, Hawaii.  March, 2008

In Hawai'i, don't even think about entering someone's house without taking off your slippahs. I have learned the hard way that it is forbidden, kapu, to walk barefoot out of someone's home, hale, with the idea of reentering without slipping on your slippahs on the way out. Tracking in any kind of foreign material into someone's hale is, in many cases, punishable by banishment to a place of refuge which, if you are a guest, might be your rental car.

Black and White Photography The Last Page - Jarrell's Cove, WA (May, 2006)

This photograph is like finding the last page torn from a paperback, seemingly left behind on a table, in a coffee shop. You pick up the page, read the ending, and begin to consider the missing chapters. You wonder about the title, envision the cover, consider the author and puzzle over the plot. You sense unabridged loss. What was the opening sentence? Where did it all start to unravel? And without the rest of the story, the ending is impenetrable.

In the beginning there had to have been optimism, at least for a while. The generous porch might have been built to sit outside in the evenings, undercover, sheltered from the rain, providing a protected platform to survey their kingdom and listen to song birds. But I wonder about the foundation. Was the adventure doomed from the outset? What were the character’s hopes? Were they realistic or just allusions? Somewhere along the way, there must have been a setback. Was there an antagonist, a precipitating incident, or some catastrophic natural event? At what point did the protagonists realize their dreams had become condemned?  How long did they struggle to right the sinking ship? (more...)
